I love this commercial, and almost bought one of these computers at a local thrift store for $10 a few months back. Considering how many unused computers I have laying around the house I thought it best that I pass on this deal.

Yeah, there’s not much you can do with them as a computer at this point, but they’re almost worth having around as a museum piece. They still look cool. My wife’s friend bought a green one and named it Kermit.

I used to have piles of museum pieces around and decided not to do that again. When I moved I took 6 or 7 out of the 30+ computers I owned, and I have to say that I’ve only used 3-4 of them. I have acquired a few more, but most of them are notebooks that I have put to use in training scenarios.
I did get a beautiful 20” iMac G4, top of the line in its day. I spent a bit of time playing with it but haven’t found any practical purpose for it. I did try using it as a third monitor on my normal desktop and it worked well, but I didn’t want to pay for the software that made this work, nor did I want to use all of that power just to run a third screen. And now that machine just sits on a shelf looking beautiful.

Smart move paring down. It’s hard to accept that these machines that were once so expensive and with which nothing is wrong now are nonetheless nearly useless. I have a 17” Apple ADC monitor I got with my G4 tower. It cost $1K. Nothing to do with it. I think I might get $50 on ebay, if I can ever be bothered.

I had one of those. Got it for free, used it for awhile on a G4 and then on something else with one of those adapter boxes (which I still have). I gave away the monitor, with a ton of other stuff. Now I’m swimming in LCDs, picking them up for $0.50/ea.
I do still have a couple of G4s laying around. My original $2100 unit is long gone (couldn’t upgrade it with duals, so replaced by a DA), but I have that DA upgraded with a dual 1.8 processor; the heatsink alone on that CPU probably weighs more than the rest of the computer combined. There’s another one that I have forgotten why I brought it along, and a Yosemite (in G4 wrappings) that is pretty much maxed out; it was my ProTools machine and now just holds up boxes.
I wouldn’t mind getting another mini, perhaps something faster than my late 2009 model, but they seem to hold their value a little too well. I’ll just have to wait until I find one tossed out at the Goodwill Outlet.
